GREAT SCOTT! It's Back to the Future Day

Hi, Happy back to the future day! October 21st 2015 was the date that Doc Brown, Marty and Jennifer come to the future in the second film in the trilogy. As you may be able to tell I'm a pretty big fan and it's so weird to think that all the films after today will be set in the past.


I don't remember how old I was when I first saw Back to the Future but it made it's mark. The character are so good together and the story is original, so much so that no one dared to produce it for ages until Universal took on the project. Today has been a really good one with songs from the film been played on the radio and almost everyone either reporting about 'Back to the Future' day or having a little joke online about speeding Delorean's. It's been really interesting to see what predictions for the future have really come true, sadly still no hover boards. It's a nice feeling when people get their geek on for a film even if they're not the biggest fan, it is after all a date which has been a long time coming and so couldn't pass unnoticed. It's also the 30th anniversary of the first film been released.

 I'm off to build my Lego Delorean while watching the Keith Lemon's 'back to the future' documentary, which I'm hoping will be really funny.

Film Review | Jurassic World

Hi, It's a while since I've been to the cinema but I finally went again a few days ago taking advantage of the Meerkat Movies promotion, sadly I don't have access to the codes personally but my friend does. I treated myself to a small popcorn with the money I saved, how big is a large popcorn there was so much. We went to the local Odeon and our film of choice was Jurassic World. We decided to see the film in 2D so I can't comment on the 3D element of the film but it was still awesome.

I had originally through that this film would be a little repetitive of the previous films, humans run away from dinosaurs the normal scenario, but then I saw the trailer and totally changed my mind. For once this wasn't a film where seeing the trailer shows you all the best bits and spoils the plot line by sharing way too much. With the hint of the new story line of genetically created dinosaurs and trained raptors, who wouldn't want to see this film?

The film is set 22 years after the first film, Jurassic world is the name of the dinosaur theme park created on the same island as the original park. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the park's operations manager, her nephews come to visit her at the park but she's too busy to look after them. Claire's assistant looks after them until they do a runner to explore the parks more adventurous attractions. Meanwhile Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) is training the park's four Velociraptors, acting as the packs alpha. The head of security thinks there is potential for the raptors to be used in the military but Owen disagrees with this. Then there is the new Indominus Rex to consider, a genetically engineered dinosaur created with a selection of different dinosaur genes and some current animals to fill the genetic gaps, created for the wow factor to create new hype for the theme park and attract visitors.

The story plot is rather believable in the sense that humans will always strive to create more, whether that is for knowledge or gain. The characters are easily likeable and capture the modern way of thinking in comparison to the original film, times have changed. There are some really lovely little hints of nostalgia referencing the original film which made watching all the more enjoyable. Everything that you would consider to be the classic and highly repeated theme of dinosaur verses man is turned on it's head with some really clever plot twists. There isn't as much emphasis on the escape as in the other films, more an objective to contain the escaped creation before it reaches the main park. It even has a lot of light humor and a underlying sexual tension between the two main characters, they obviously have a past which is hinted at. I really enjoyed this film, it was a lovely night out at the cinema.

Film Review | Spy

Hi, another film review for you today, this time I am reviewing Spy which I went to see a few weeks ago. The main character is Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) a qualified spy who has never seen a day at work that wasn't at her desk. She works along side Bradley Fine (Jude Law) as his intelligence while on missions, Susan has become a little infatuated with him over time. One day Bradley Fine is tracking the daughter of the previous owner of a bomb, Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne). Fine is killed in action when the mission goes wrong. This is when a heart broken Susan puts herself up to go out on the field and track the people responsible for her partners death.

With a selection of the worst possible undercover identities and even worse designed spy gadgets, Susan sets out on her first under cover mission. All she has to do is stay unknown to the target and report back to HQ. All the while a rogue agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham) is out to solve the case on his own. There are some really funny exchanges of words between the pair. The film is full of random moments which are massively cringe worthy in a funny way. The story is quick paced and full of funny moments. I enjoyed the film but I wasn't blown away by it, it was pretty much a classic spy film with the usual gun fights and some impressive choreography of hand to hand combat. There are also good elements of blossoming friendships and personal discovery by Susan. There is a pretty good twist at the end which I didn't see coming which is always nice.

I never know how much to talk about the plot of a film in a review so I hope I don't give too much away?

Film Review | The Age of Adaline

Hi, the other week I went to see The Age of Adaline with my parents, we went to the local independent cinema The Rex, in Elland. It's super cheap at £5 per ticket and only £4 on Mondays. The Rex is one of the oldest purpose built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. It opened as a Picture House on 12th December 1912. The cinema has a very vintage feel, it has a small screen complete with operational curtains ready to close for the interval when ice creams is available. My mum wanted to see the film because she's a massive Harrison Ford fan.

Adaline (Blake Lively) has been 29 years old for 8 decades, she hasn't aged a day, the cause an accident. She watches her family and friends age around her while she has to hide her true identity to keep them and herself safe. She lives her whole life keeping people at a distance so that no one makes the connection that she has not changed. Inevitably she can't stop being human and meets Ellis (Michiel Huisman) which complicates her solitary way of life. What is supposed to be a simple weekend away at his parents house becomes a trip down memory lane when she meets an old flame William (Harrison Ford).

The film plays out with a selection of flash backs and memories narrated in a very scientific and to the point manner. I really enjoyed the film, it kept me interested in both her past and where her story was heading. Finding out more and more about her past and how she has keeps renewing herself with new identities every ten years. There are elements of both happiness and sadness in this film in good quantities, a film that keeps you thinking once you've left the cinema. I would highly recommend this film as there's not too much mushiness with the romance, the film is more focused on the emotional state of Adaline and the sacrifices she has made over the years. A lot of people would give anything to stay young forever, but at what cost when everything around you changes into a place you no longer know and you start to lose the people you love.

Film Review | Mad Max Fury Road

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that you have to see this film. I was a little bit skeptical as to how a car chase in the dessert could be entertaining, how wrong could I have been. The imagery is mind blowing, the characters are believable and you can really connect/hate them. The subject matter is thought provoking. I loved every minuet of it, I didn't have a second of the film where my attention was not firmly grabbed. A must see film, if you don't get time to see it on the big screen add it too your to watch list. I haven't seen the previous Mad Max films which proves that you don't have to to get this story. I particularly liked the part played by Nicholas Hoult, who I was drawn too during film because I couldn't work out who he was. It's a few weeks since I saw the film now and when I remember it I want to watch it all over again.
